Astronomy Day
Flagstaff, AZ and Sedona / Red Rocks
April 23 - 25, 2004

Sunday the 25th, I made sure we ventured out of beautiful Flagstaff early enough in the morning that we could take the scenic highway 89A through Sedona. The beauty of the landscape was unbelievable - heartstopping, tear wrenching, superlatives and photos can't capture how amazing the place is. Well, maybe a good photographer can, but there is something etherial about dropping into the canyons. I don't know what a vortex is, exactly, but I can believe that they're there. Here's some pictures that we took. You'll have to go yourself though. Any comments I have about the pictures you can read by hovering over the image.

We missed the views at the top of the canyon, and of course the scale is hard to capture in a picture.

The colors were so vibrant, the rocks so red and looming, the greens were a shade I've never seen anywhere else...

I want to come back perhaps next spring (before it gets too hot) and camp up in the canyon.

You can see how crowded the roads are. There are plenty of turn-outs to stop and admire the views.

The rock formations and colors were really neat.

Scenery, scenery, and more scenery. Beware though - the town of Sedona is very touristy. I'd rather stay in Flagstaff (I'd rather retire in Flagstaff) than stay in the town of Sedona. Flagstaff is only about an hour away - and a couple hours from the Grand Canyon.
