The Day The Boat Moved
August 7, 2001
When Graphic Solutions moved from a nice, sleek downtown building to the
bario next to our sister company Fabrication Arts as well as the 32nd St Naval
Station's prostitute headquarters, we shared our parking lot with a boat
being remade by Captain Mike. We watched as he added a couple feet to the
middle, we inhaled the overspray as he painted the boat, we dusted our cars
regularly, but by the time the boat was ready to leave, it felt as though
a part of our family was leaving.
Despite the bosses' insistance that it wasn't a holiday, not too much work
was done when the boat was packed up.
We had thought that the boat would move the same day, but loading it took
long enough that there wasn't time!
Here's the boat, unobstructed by the 10' gate normally protecting it and
our parking lot. (You can see the posts)
Deana (Frank's daughter) and Lauren (receptionist) trying hard to stay on
the phones while such excitement was happening outdoors.
Here's a picture of the San Diego Boat Movers loading the boat onto the
trailer. For a semi-complete explanation, click
here.
The Bario children watching. It's not as though they went to school, anyhow.
Lyn watching the men load the boat. If she had been in charge, it wouldn't
have taken hours to load.
A Great Photoshopping opportunity, although in this case, John is demonstrating
the size of the space between the side of the truck and the palm tree. (Sandy
is in the background. The truck was blocking a part of the street, so he had
to walk into the street to get to the liquor store.)
To get the truck all the way in, the mirrors had to come off.
Pete, JohnO, and Irving decided to come out and see the proceedings.
Pete and JohnO sneaking back to work, while Debbi and Cheryl don't even
pretend to be working.
Cheryl and Kathy, speculating on who Cheryl should bill this time to. "082!"
Frank wouldn't let the other designers go out, but Mike and Dan watched
through the bars on the window.
(Rita's head is also there, but as a part of admin, was allowed out.)
Here's the boat, all loaded up! (Mostly)
Simon had forgotten about the boat move, and was wondering who was in his
space.
There are benefits to befriending a sign fabricator. Jason installs signage.
Mikey escaped out, and shields his eyes against the bright sunlight as he
gazes upon the boat.
But Wait, there's MORE!!!! Next is the journey of the
boat to the water! Via Downtown!
That's enough! Take me back
